‘I think I can!’ – Winning Words Poetry
Students from two SEN schools in North and East Dorset created poems based on the Olympic and Paralympic Values: Friendship, Respect, Determination, Courage & Equality. This was part of the national Winning Words poetry initiative, developed as part of the Cultural Olympiad, and in Dorset, organised by DepARTures, the county’s arts-in-education agency.
DETERMINATION
Try To Be The Best
It’s winning together,
team work and courage.
We’ve got mates!
Nothing’s going to stop us now!
It’s like lightening.
Like God saying something to you.
Try to be the best!
Aden, Andrew, Will, Dave
FRIENDSHIP
Emma’s sad
Come on, let’s cheer her up.
Cheer up Emma!
Let’s give her a Barbie,
a butterfly Barbie,
or a fairy.
Let’s give her a knight
in shining armour,
or a DS.
Friendship is like
a story about a king,
or about Vikings
fighting the baddies together.
It’s a story about a dragon
who couldn’t sleep,
who breathes fire.
Friends help each other
even when there are
scary ghosts or monsters.
D’you want to come round
to my house and play?
Let’s read the scripts.
Who wants to be the dragon?
I like you and you like me.
We’re good friends for life.

In Order To Thrive
When I go for a jog
I end up walking.
All the fibres of my body
tell me to do better.
So I must do better.
That’s like me –
I must work harder.
I’m strong.
I must work better,
I mustn’t be late.
In order to thrive
we must be strong.
We much be strong together.
